Being an International Student in Australia: My Journey

This is my story.

On February 15, 2019, I arrived in Melbourne, Australia, ready to start a new chapter at Monash University. Like many international students, I was excited but also full of uncertainty. I knew I had a long road ahead, adjusting to life in a new country far from everything familiar.

Adjusting to Life on Campus

My first home in Melbourne was a dorm at Monash University, where I shared the kitchen and bathroom with 10 other people. Living with so many others in a shared space came with its own set of challenges—coordinating schedules, respecting each other's space, and adapting to different lifestyles. But it also taught me patience, flexibility, and the joy of community.

As time went on, I experienced the Melbourne rental market firsthand, searching for housing options off-campus. This was a whole new challenge—understanding rental agreements, navigating inspections, and learning about different suburbs. Each move was a chance to explore a new part of the city and understand life beyond campus.

The Academic Journey

I came to Monash University with a purpose: to earn both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. The academic journey was rigorous, demanding not only dedication but also effective time management. Throughout my studies, I maintained an 86 WAM, which required a lot of focus, discipline, and determination. I learned to balance study commitments with the complexities of daily life in a new country, including part-time jobs and social activities.

Facing Lockdowns and Coping with Loss

The pandemic lockdowns were particularly challenging, as they cut off the possibility of returning home and limited my social interactions. Studying from a dorm room felt isolating, and I missed in-person classes and the chance to connect with classmates. Yet, I found ways to stay motivated, focusing on my studies and keeping in touch with family and friends online.

The hardest part of my journey was losing a parent while living abroad. Not being able to be with my family for the funeral was heartbreaking. I had to cope with this loss on my own, balancing my grief with the demands of student life. Through these experiences, I learned the importance of seeking support and building a mental health toolkit to help me through the tough times.

Growing Resilience and Giving Back

Despite the challenges, I am proud of everything I’ve achieved at Monash. I met incredible people, built my professional network, and discovered strength I didn’t know I had. Completing my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees was more than an academic achievement—it was a testament to resilience, growth, and perseverance.

Now, I want to give back to others who are on a similar path. I offer free consultations to international students considering studies in Australia, aiming to provide guidance, support, and a friendly ear to those who may feel uncertain or alone.
